When is a kids movie a kids movie?

One of the things I am finding increasingly difficult as my kids get older is deciding on what movies/TV they can and can’t watch. And the film industry don’t make it easy for us. Take the latest Transformer movie. There is a cartoon version that my 5 year old son Andrew loves to watch (although I think my husband Dan is the biggest fan – reminds him of his childhood!). So when Andrew sees the Transformer toys in Tesco, he naturally wants to see the film. But its a 12 and, according to a friend yesterday ,contains some very bad language and stuff you wouldn’t want you kids to see. So why market toys at the kids who shouldn’t see the movie and give us parents such a headache in trying to explain why? And it isn’t just the toy section in your local supermarket that is out to get you but MacDonalds and Burger King as well ( not that I frequent these places too much honestly!!). The problem with going to the cinema is that you don’t get to vet it first. This explains why Andrew has only been twice! Help is at hand ,however, in the form of a wesite. Take a look at http://www.kids-in-mind.com/ The creators of the site seek to enable adults to determine whether a movie is appropriate for them or their children, according to their own criteria. They do not assign an inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE & PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10. They also explain in detail why a film rates high or low in a specific category, and  include instances of SUBSTANCE USE, a list of DISCUSSION TOPICS that may elicit questions from kids and MESSAGES the film conveys.

The reviews are very indepth and can lead you to think there is nothing out there that will ever be suitable! What I found helpful was to look at a review of a film I am happy for my children to watch and see how that is reviewed so I had a base to compare. After all one of the most violent things kids watch are Tom and Jerry cartoons!!
