Family Fragrance

Facing a New Year is always a good time to start something new. We often make resolutions to improve our health or job or relationships, but do we ever apply it to our parenting? I hope you have been listening to the free downloads from Heritage builders. I have just finished listening to no. 6 on Family fragrance. This looks at the way we run our homes and the atmosphere we create for our children. The authors use the acronym A.R.O.M.A. which stands for AFFECTION – RESPECT – ORDER – MERRIMENT – AFFIRMATION, giving practical ways in which we can encourage these things in our home. I sooo want my kids to enjoy coming home and being at home, even when they are married and have homes of their own. So, one of my new years resolutions is to look again at these 5 elements and see how I can improve the atmosphere – the AROMA – of our home.

One of the ways I have been trying to bring more order is by getting things ready for school the night before, trying to avoid running around at the last minute for book-bags, recorders ,homework and shoes! We are two days in and have been on time both mornings! The other thing I want to introduce is with regard to respect. The author talks about how she introduced just one golden rule to her class room as a teacher, which was “ do unto others as you would have them do to you” . I think that will be a good house rule to make as you can use it to cover respect of each others belongings, talking nicely to one another and even being helpful to each other.

For more practical ways to have a happy home take a listen to the Family Fragrance download. Here’s to a “Happy New Year” and “Happy homes” everywhere!
